Burlesque

In February 2011 I entered the world of burlesque.

I had been an audience member for a few years in the run up, but last February I performed my first act. Performing under the name Aurora Borealis, my debut act was The Mermaid. My nerves were the worst they had ever been and my costume had been a mad rush but it created such a positive response from the audience it was well worth the hard work. I was so happy to hear everyones feedback from the performance as it was all positive. I received a further 6 bookings and was described as one of the best "newbies" people had ever seen ( I hate to sound braggy but I'm still patting myself on the back for it).

I made the costume myself and choreographed the act so that it was jam packed with content to keep the audience interested. My costume became the waves of the sea as I took layers off and I hand made my self sequined fish poi's to twinkle as they swam through the air.

But why did I do it?

Well there were so many reasons to do it and only a few insignificant not to. I spent my childhood at dancing classes, competitions, exams, acting classes and in shows. For ten years I hadn't done any kind of performing, so when I went to my first burlesque show in Leeds and watched performers from around the world grace the stage with their mouth watering costumes and vintage elegance. I immediately knew that I HAD to do it. It took about two years of putting off and psyching up but I did it. I had found a medium of performance that incorporates dancing, acting, comedy, music and wonderful costumes. I could take my acts in what ever direction I wanted and had complete creative freedom. The only down side was having to take my clothes off. Essentially I didn't want to "strip". I took the risky decision to try and avoid showing anything, like the traditional forms of burlesque and managed to pretty much pull it off. The beauty of burlesque is that you can make it work for you and mould it around what you want or don't want to do. I find myself asking are there actually any rules in burlesque?

Where did I do it?

Casa Bellini Burlesque! My friend a fellow performer Constance Peach created and runs the Newcastle burlesque night and was kind enough to take the risk on me. I have now become a resident performer of Casa Bellini and Constance has been incredibly supportive by letting try new experimental things each time. I must say the venue, The Peoples Theatre, has a fantastic stage, atmosphere and audience, which is pretty much my motivation.

Then What?

I spent 2010 performing around the North East at nights such as The Golden Garter in Sunderland and created a further two acts:

Jacqueline is the story of a Jack in the box that tries to win the heart of a toy fire man (comedy).

Yes really! If you're reading this thinking "I wish I could have the nerve to do that", then do it! There are plenty of burlesque classes happening round the country. I recommend the class at Dance City, Newcastle if your in the north east.

I'm filled with enthusiasm for 2012 already!

I am working on my new hire collection at the moment which is scheduled to launch in March. I have decided to create a hire range so that he more expensive pieces can be accessible to everyone. The collection will include a variety of quirky and classic hats/ fascinaters that will be available to hire for any length of time. I am gong to make sure there will be some fabulous pieces ideal for the race season, weddings, parties and even Halloween. All the pieces will be available to hire online and will be posted with next day delivery to your home. Local collections will also be available. Hiring will be a fabulous way of wearing wonderful hats in an economical, affordable way.

I have also had some fantastic commission enquiries already so I cant wait to set to work on them and share the photos of the finished works. Durham Lumiere Festival

Last Sunday I went to visit the Lumiere festival in one of my favourite northern cities, Durham. Lumiere, the Festival of light, took over the centre for four night for the second year. One of Durhams most (locally) famous statues was turned into a giant snow globe and the Cathedral was painted with moving light.

I love artists that work with light and one day maybe I will be one myself! Light seemed to be an important part of the work I was making in my final year at University. My favourite work is Anthony McCall's Line describing a cone. I would certainly like to submit some proposals to next years Lumiere festival.

The epitome of style, obviously.

The lovely lady that won the 6 crowns was thrilled, so I was delighted to see them go to a good home. She told me that she was a hat lover and would be wearing them all year round for birthday celebrations and parties.

Ruby Wedding Mini Party Hats

My mum and Dad celebrated their 40th Ruby Wedding Anniversary the week before last and had a big dinner party with family and friends. To help the celebrations along I volunteered to make little party hats and crowns for all the guests. Quite a big challenge really in the time scale I had, and considering there was 56 guests, but I managed to pull it off and everyone loved wearing them. Most of the guests took them home to wear on Christmas day!

I stuck to the gold, red and silver colour scheme and made the little hats in a variety of designs.

Highlight from the night was seeing my dad wear a miniature crown all night...

I will be making a rage of luxurious party hats soon plus some special Christmas themed hats to go in my online shop.

Hattastic Halloween!!

My goodness!! It has been such an awfully long time since I have added a new post to my blog. Ive been so busy doing things to blog about that I haven't had time to blog about them!

The past year has been wonderful for The Libertarian. I'll must fill you in on all the goings on. I'll be writing about such highlights as gaining global press coverage at Royal Ascot 2011, organising a my first catwalk show for the first Newcastle Fashion Week plus some other important non-Libertarian things I have been up to in my spare time such as performing at the 2011 Edinburgh festival.

But first!!!!!

It is All hallows Eve and I must show you the headdress I made for myself to wear to the Caribbean Carnival themed Halloween party on Saturday night in Newcastle...

Halloween Carnival Headdress

I was a Halloween carnival girl but not wanting to go for the full bra and thong show girl look I made myself some nice jazzy shoulder epaulets to attach to my skeleton t-shirt.

I had spider cob webs leaking from my eyes and rags in my hugely back combed pony tail but I typically didn't manage to get a close up as the photos went to pot after the carnival punch came on the scene.

I made myself headdresses for last Halloween as well...

Believe it or not I am with my boyfriend in this photo- Al of Als Musique Boutique and I made myself a beautiful transparent white rose crown to complete my ghost look.

Here I dressed as a pumpkin and painted triangular eyes and a huge black smile. This costume was a bit of a last minute rush so I whizzed up the little pumpkin hat with felt, but it was so popular on the night I decided to make a special sequinned version for my Rock n Rose collection this year.

The sequinned pumpkin hat has had great feedback. It featured in More magazines recommended spooktaular buys and on This Morning's Halloween Costume pics- modelled by a beautiful little girl. It just goes to show you can wear Libertarian headwear what ever age you are!

As you can see I love dressing up for Halloween (well for anything really but Ill get to that in another time) so its no wonder that I take such great pleasure in designing headwear for the occasion.

Science and creativity

This is a photo of our body heat (although it does look like we're on an 80s acid house album cover)

It took me a long time to realise that there was a beneficial connection between these. At school I pretty much daydreamed through all of my science classes and was convinced science was about measurements and I wasn't that sort of "measuring" person.

So it wasn't until I was at university studying Fine Art, that I actually developed an interest in science. If any one knows me from then they'll know about my interest in black holes. I actually began to paint black holes around the building and it became part of my degree show work. They did actually look like physical holes but they were only holes you could enter in your imagination, not the type you get sucked into and loose time etc etc.

Anyway focusing on design the past couple of years I don't seem to do as much interesting reading and exploring as I used to. I seem to be more turned on to absorbing initial visual impact, rather than developing my trail of thought through processes and seeing where it takes me. But I went to the centre for Life museum in Newcastle last weekend and Ive gotten a new taste for combining creative curiosity and science. I was on a day trip with my mum and nephew so didn't get masses of time to play around with all the science toys but they do have a lot of things to be hands on with and a planetarium.

I definitely have to get back onto that way of thinking and see where it takes me. Surely this is better research for new designs in my search for true originality rather than re-creating designs from the past?

My friends moving to Australia for a year so we had a day out today. I made her this T-shirt for her soon to be new home town of Sydney. It is intended to send subconscious signals into her mind so she will remember to come back after a year. Fingers crossed.

Along with all the orange Wednesday fun, we went to get our hair done at our friends salon- Hobson and Holmes. Look what he did to my hair! It is the perfect cutest little bow. Its like a little hat.

Carmen Miranda

I watched a show on good old BBC4 the other day about Carmen Miranda. I sort of vaguely knew who she was but pretty surprised to find out how much she had done and how hard she worked.

I am now completely fascinated by her head-wear. Her (what I would call) fruit turbans have been ingrained into my head as some sort of stereotypical tropical head wear, but they are so much more. What I would like to know is: is Carmen Miranda responsible for turbans being so fashionable in the 1940's or was she just following the trend?

Iam setting myself the challenge to create a piece of wearable contemporary head-wear inspired By Carmen Miranda... off to work I go.

It is one of the most fabulous things I have seen this year and is a complete inspiration. It is based on a peacock feather. I love its shape. To me it is an intelligent tiara. Post-Christmas

Ahhh a sigh of accomplishment...

That's what I feel when I look back at Christmas- I didn't do half of what I planned but it was my first memorable white Christmas, I made a huge Christmas cake and I made crackers with gifts that people actually liked. The secret to my successful cracker prizes was miniature bottles of whisky and gin for the boys (and me), toy cars for the little ones, and handmade Swarovski crystal earrings for the girls- oh and added a scratch card to each one. The youngest guest won the most and typically was pretty oblivious to his triumph, as he doesn't understand what money is.

It's been the deepest snow we've ever had so I got loads of snow pictures.

Malcolm our snow man. He look suspiciously like Chris Evans. He wore my Dad's 1960's glasses and his blueberry eyes kept falling out. I enjoyed kicking his head off in the end. Little piles of melted snowmen are too sad and they drag on for days, so I am a pro-snowman-jumper.

Chocolate Mince Pies

Last week I went to a Red Cross Christmas charity event and not only did I manage to pick up a vintage velvet opera cape and an 80's Louis Feraud dress for pennies they also had Chocolate mince pies... they were gorgeous. If you don't like mince pies then you might like these because they have less of a traditional sweet mince taste and more of a mature chocolate orange taste. I am definitely going to try and make these this year. I also have a craving to make an over the top three tier Christmas cake with pillars and everything. Just like an tragic 80s wedding cake really but my mum thinks it is a bit unnecessary. But what is a western Christmas about if it isn't about excess? You cant bring me up in ambitiously excessive culture and then expect me to make a one tier Christmas cake for the single reason of not being able to eat it all. Marie Antoinette wouldn't get on so well with my mum maybe.

Thinking about the Kirsten Dunst Film Marie-Antoinette makes me think of Laduree. Ive only ever come across their macaroons on glossy pages but after visiting their site it is my new ambition to visit one of their tea rooms. I could maybe go on a tea room tour? Wouldn't that be a nice way to spend your days. That one is certainly going in the pipe line for 2010. People need to know about the tea rooms of the world. They are culturally significant parts of societies. So when I write about them, people will learn more about the world, humanity and be a bit more understanding. Tea room tours could solve the racial issues of the world.

I love baking and Ive got well into using bundt nordic ware cake pans. This summer I put a little "Libertarian" twist on their intended use and made ice cream and jelly cakes with them. The outcome was truly super.

Its been a ridiculous long time since i last posted but to catch up on the last few months Ive generally been working on my site, doing alot of vintage fairs and developing mini addictions such as True Blood, Russell Brand, Catherine Cookson Dramas and Chai Rooibus tea. At one point I was well into Ice cream soda ice cream floats at Heaton Perk, but ive had to kick that one out the window because of weight gain issues.

So my eyes are a bit more square, I'm a little bit more fatter but Ive got some great new vintage finds (Which may be a contradiction, new vintage and all that). An ideal time to start Burlesque dancing I hear you cry. Yes your right I really should, but I have started making burlesque themed items for the shop like tassels, fascinators and pin-up tattoos.

Ive been busy photographing my work on models recently. It all started the other week when someone said to me that they could only wear T-shirts with jeans. Its that fascinator time of the year with lots of weddings and race events coming up so I have started making them to order so that customers can get exactly what they want.

I'm working on some new idea at the moment - lots of things to do with time, some recycled fashion and some pin up girl themed bits. Plus booking up summer events and organising the next Fairs Fayre market (12th July)

Fairs Fayre

The Libertarian has been helping to organise a new market in Newcastle called Fairs Fayre. The aim of the market is to bring together a diverse collection of new creative businesses based in the North East of England.

The first Fairs Fayre will take place on Sunday 29th March at The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle.

What will be there:
Hand made goodies by local crafters, artists and designers. Goodies such as: Bags, purses, cake stands, jewellery, clocks, glassware, mirrors, clothing, Screen printed Tee's, cushions, coasters, fascinators, accessories, hair accessories, bow ties, comics, zines....etc etc

Locally made music available to buy!

Vintage goodies such as: vinyl records, clothing, accessories and home-wear.

Plus you can bring your old clothes to swap with Magpie swop and you can try a pint of the Fairs Fayre Real Ale (available for one day only).

A T-shirt as a Tonic?

A T-shirt as a Tonic?

The Libertarian has produced some new T-shirts and they are not the average run of the mill...

There are so many bombardments of imagery used all the time, so much of which we probably don't consciously take in, it just slips in without us noticing. We know allot of imagery comes from advertising and marketing campaigns, so if their subliminal information slips into our mind what about other things in our environment like the clothes we wear?

Take for example that retro style basketball T-shirt readily available on any high street; it has been reproduced so many times that it doesn't actually mean anything. Flashing space filling graphics around doesn't really say much about you, so why not use your clothing as a tool to keep your mind busy rather than passive?

This was the inspiration for The Libertarian "Crossword" T-shirt. A T-shirt that can keep you (and those around you) occupied. Mobile brain training if you like, sending goodness back into your subconscious.

“Crossword” has another interesting aspect which it shares with the “Paint by Numbers Full English” and the “Dot to Dot” T-shirt. They encourage the wearer to actually draw, colour and mark the T-shirt. This is the point where you cry:

“Great a new inclusive relationship for me to have with my clothes...this could make me see the world in a different way!”

A little far fetched but if a T-shirt can change the habit of the relationship you have with your clothes, why cant it influence the way you see things in a slightly new way?

This leads me to the statement T-shirt. A representation of what you believe written right across your chest; but how often do you find a statement T-shirt that actually has relevance? Looking back to the mindless generic T-shirts which are endlessly produced, they don't represent anything other than one big cliché. The Libertarian's answer to this is their “Club Cliché” T-shirt. A grey marl scrummage T-shirt with 80's style neon pink lettering.

Along a similar anti-mass production theme there is the “The high street has no heart”, “Product of mass consumption” and “SALE!” T-shirts. You may argue that highlighting consumerism on a T-shirt that you can buy is a contradiction in its self. However these designs are about communicating these ideas directly to the effected. They bring issues about the current economic state of consumerism to people that may not be otherwise reached or interested and open them for discussion in a bright, colourful and kitsch way.

Are these T-shirts just T-shirts?

Can a T-shirt be art, and can a designer be an artist?

The Libertarian

Let me introduce myself- I am Jayne the creator of The Libertarian. I design and make jewellery, accessories, clothing and home wear under the name of The Libertarian.

My aim is to create things that don't already exist, and in doing so offer an alternative to the overproduced high street.

I like to be inventive with the materials I use; I use allot of recycled materials such as vinyl records, Biro's and rulers. I'd like to think I could make something new out of anything but I haven't put myself to the test yet. I do use new materials as well and in the future I would really like to only use ethical and organically produced fabrics. I haven't quite got to that stage at the moment but i do use sweatshop free T-shirts to screen print my designs onto.

My designs are often quirky and funny. They can make people laugh out loud at times but I am always striving to create new, exciting, original items with style.

Ive got so many ideas and not much money to create them, so I'm hoping one day someone will come along and help me!
